about

In the winter of 2019, Pothamus withdrew for 10 days in the forest-filled regions of the Ardennes to record their first full length album. Whilst this debut is yet to be released, the band meanwhile steps out in the open with ‘Advaita’, an older yet previously unreleased song. “Releasing this song, for us feels a bit like the closing of a chapter”, drummer Mattias explains. “But at the same time, we hope that for certain people the song can be an introduction to us, and can serve as a preface to the upcoming full length. An ending for us, but a start for someone else”.

On ‘Advaita’ Pothamus channels oriental chants, shoegaze drones and pulsating drum & bass syncopation. “While the song still carries a lot of our characteristics, we consider it more of a stand-alone track. It doesn’t quite fit within the story we aimed to tell with our full album. We started writing in 2017. At the start of that process we made the very conscious and deliberate choice to start anew. New concepts, new ideas, and a new approach to songwriting”, drummer Mattias explains. “With this rebirth came an inevitable break with the past”.

Whilst it was the last song the band wrote before this conceptual renaissance, it already captures a lot of the their prevailing personality. “Pothamus has always been driven by the big questions, and in that pursuit we return to the basics of music: coming together to drift away. We gaze inside in order to understand the outside world”, Mattias says. “Content-wise, the title ‘Advaita’ refers to non-duality, in which the self and the cosmos are one and the same soul”, bass player Michael clarifies. “References to the Buddhist Heart Sutra can also be found in the lyrics. The song explores the concept of a self. It is a meditation on soul-seeking and asking yourself if there is anything to be found”.

lyrics

Lyrics:

Self / non-self

Sightless
Seeing
No realm of the eye

Formless
Feeling
All voidness around

I’ve been seeing
Soon I’ll be out

I’ve been feeling
Soon I’ll be out

I am
Advaita
