‘Varos’ is the final chapter of ‘Raya’, the upcoming full length album of Pothamus (out December 4th). In this conjunction of the earthy and the ethereal, the Belgian trio organically blends ritualistic percussion and pulsating basslines with otherworldly soundscapes and devotional vocals. ‘Varos’ represents Death, paraphrasing the concluding chapter in the band’s own mythology. Catatonic dream-like sounds evocate visions of passage, while lyrics cantillate the next destination.
On ‘Varos’ Pothamus contemplates the end of our profane existence; the casting off of our bodily remnants. The sanskrit term antarābhava intrinsically proclaims the idea of reincarnation. More precisely, from the records of early Buddhist schools of thought, the idea is put forward of an intermediate, transitional, or liminal state between Death and Rebirth. Since all that is tangible is left behind, a question imposes itself: what is it exactly that reaches this transitional realm? If this stretches beyond Death; it is also what constitutes the essence of Life.
The premise is put forward of an energetic element, ‘Raya’, conceiving and establishing Life in all forms. While our individual, physical and bodily lifes may and will end at a given time, Life and lifeforce as such endures, manifesting in new specific forms. ‘Varos’ thus symbolises the final chapter, yet it rejects the very notion of finality. This idea recalls the cyclical conception of time as put forward in ‘Orath’. The final chapter thus weaves into the first, as an end that constitutes a new beginning. We come round. Full circle.
lyrics
Antarabhāva;
Hibernate,
I’m awake.
Exister / n’existé
Abandon this vessel,
Discard now;
Unnestle.
Desert this earthly veil again.

Mixing sludge, tribal and post-rock elements, Pothamus takes you on an enchanting trip. In this trio’s enigmatic world -
molded by repetitive riffage and floating drones backed by trance-inducing percussion and abrasive bass lines - the search for meaning stands central. Be sure to catch this captivating trip live. Tune low, turn up, drift off....more
Our friends and rehearsal space companions released this beast of an album. Expect a psychedelic post-metal trip of an hour. If you haven't heard this, you've been living in a cave. Pothamus
Our friends from L'itch know how to itch and bite. This gnarly debut album combines noise, groove and stoner elements into one blend of self titled 'krank'rock. Enjoy! Pothamus
The latest from this one-man sludge metal project from Baltimore is discordant, spacious, and as heavy as a full group could ever be. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 12, 2019
